COAST FELLOWS

COAST has recruited early career researchers (postdoctoral researchers, PhD students, Masters students and Licentiate students) who form the community of COAST Fellows

The project promotes student mobility among both European  and local partners, which will be an important indicator in the evaluation of researchers and institutions.  Further, students from the German-funded “West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and  Adapted Land Use'' master program “Climate Change and Marine Sciences” at the collaborator UTA will be  involved in fieldwork, thereby providing M.Sc. thesis opportunities to them.

The COAST fellows will create a strong community of next-generation ocean scientists who will tackle ocean issues at basin scale, and are equipped with the skills to do so.

Julian Stauffer

Doctoral researcher in the deep-sea biology working group at GEOMAR in Kiel, Germany with a background in biology, bioinformatics, and biological oceanography. In the COAST project, Julian will help collecting acoustic data to map the coastal regions of Santo Antão between 0 and 200 m.

Here is a quick introduction to some of our fellows :

Ariadna Martinez

Doctoral researcher in the Ocean and Littoral Sedimentary Processes group based at the Institute of Marine Sciences of Barcelona (ICM-CSIC) Spain, with background in GIS, benthic ecology and paleoceanography. With these interests, Ariadna will participate in the COAST Project in the development of a geo-database and assist in the study of regional benthic biodiversity of Santo Antao.

Cassandra Pacheco

Master Student Researcher in Oceanographic Team working group at the Department of Oceanography and Fisheries, Faculty of Sciences and Technology at the University of the Azores (DOP/FCT – UAc). Under the framework of the COAST project, Cassandra will be analysing and processing satellite imagery data to study spatial gradients and temporal variability of surface and near-surface ocean properties around Santo Antão island.

Tristan da Silva e Ornelas

Doctoral researcher at the University of Aveiro, Portugal with a background in Biology, Marine ecology, and conservation. Within the COAST project, Tristan will be assessing the biodiversity of coastal areas down to 200m around Santo Antão. Tasks include working on trophic food webs and ecosystem functioning to implement conservation measures.

Jessica Ferreira

Research fellow at the Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies (CESAM) of the University of Aveiro, Portugal, with a background in marine megafauna conservation. In the COAST project, Jessica will focus on video transect analysis to extract data on fish species diversity in the different sampling sites (shallow and deep) around the Santo Antão island.
